  • I spent a lot of my late 20's trying to really define my why and my purpose.
    .
People always say that your "why" should make you cry because it's so powerful.
    .
I felt like a freaking idiot because everyone else seemed to have it figured out and I didn't.
    .
THEEEEN my girl @heyjencasey posed a really interesting idea:
    .
If you take away the vehicle of your job and all of the tasks you do on a daily basis, what would you want to do?
    .
    I was pretty stumped.
    .
For a long time I had identified my "why" teaching the appreciation of music to other students.
    .
To provide the same band family that I had.
    .
Soooo what would I want to do if I didn't have the option of teaching band or music?
    .
I thought on this for awhile because it was completely different than anything I had thought about before.
    .
Then I went to a conference in July and it hit me like a thunderbolt.
    .
    Y'all.
    .
I started ugly crying, snot running down my face, couldn't even talk.
    .
    *Picture the Kim Kardashian meme.*
    .
    Deep breath
    .
I want to help people push past their boundaries so that they can become their true authentic self and create a life that kicks freaking ass.
    .
If I can help even one person whether it be a student through my teaching or a client through my coaching, then I am fulfilled.
    .
So, if you're like I was - stuck not knowing my "why"- then I challenge you with the same question Jen asked me: .

  • Hey folks. The past week I’ve been inpatient. Instead of planning for finals last week I planned my death. It was such a weird place to be in my head. Recent events triggered my PTSD and it spiraled out of control honestly. I stopped eating, thinking that my body was trying to kill me anyways, might as well help it along. I stopped drinking water and got awful headaches and cramps. One of my friends left my life(which I was okay with) but it didn’t help my already poor health.
My heart would pound out of my chest from the time I woke up to the time I fell asleep. I wanted to do it without medicine, which was stupid because now that I’m medicated, my heart beats a lot closer to normal. My friends I thought would be better off without me actually care and I still get to take my finals, so my hard work won’t be for nothing like I thought. I was knocked down but I’m not out for the count yet. It feels all too personal, but I never want anyone to feel this way, to feel so alone and misunderstood. Please reach out if you feel like suicide is your only option. I love you, please stay strong.

We must see our women as our equals not a as a piece of meat. Our responsibility as men is to create a world where we celebrate women and recognize their power. I’m tired of seeing men post disrespectful pictures, comments and posts of our sistas, mothers, daughters, life givers. Brothas its time we do better 💪🏿

  • There is nothing wrong with a good before and after to mark progress and something you've worked hard for this but this is a different kind of comparison. What if in both of these photos you see strong women?
The first is someone who is strong because of habit, being self-driven,and self-motivated, and committed to self-care. Someone who eats what is good for her because she has the power to. But also someone who didn't fully understand the struggle it can be to get out of bed, let alone exercise. The struggle to eat right because it takes too much planning and execution. That second woman shows someone who realized life is fluid and now knows that change is constant. We are always changing and growing (in this case, I literally grew in size 😜😂). The things that make that woman stronger in the second photo are all of the things that can't be seen, all of the obstacles that were overcome.
Not soon after that first picture was taken, this same woman found herself unraveling because of years of ups and downs from stress. She found herself waking up each day struggling with anxiety and depression, which was new to her. It completely overwhelmed and debilitated her for a time. A woman who traded good solid habits for whatever was easiest because she didn't have the mental energy to take care of herself. That strong woman in the after photo is someone who went through something trying but never gave up completely on herself. It shows a fighter, someone who didn't give up even when she wanted to. Someone who developed more empathy, more desire to be better and do better, more drive, and a different version in a whole new season, than that in the first. Someone who now has to replace bad habits with the good ones she used to be familiar with. She pulled herself up from places physically and mentally that were insanely difficult. She learned more about who she is and who she is becoming.
    Strong:
    strôNG
    1. having the power to move heavy weights or perform other physically demanding tasks.
    2. able to withstand great force or pressure.
No matter where you are at in the journey, you can do it. Embrace that change is constant. We won't always be who we thought we were.

  • Episode 9 of @wtfeminine podcast is out today and believe me when I tell you, it's one you do not want to miss! Dianne Bevelander is my husband's cousin and I have been inspired by her since the moment we met. Dianne was born and raised in South Africa and now calls The Netherlands her home. She is a professor of management education, with a focus on gender equality, at Erasmus University. She is also a cancer WARRIOR who is right in the middle of her battle!
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In this episode, we discuss the biases and other challenges that women face out in the world, specifically when it comes to women in management positions and other positions of leadership. They also discuss the difference between diversity and inclusion and the work that still needs to be done.
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Diversity is inviting you to the party and inclusion is asking you to dance. I think a lot of us now understand diversity but we are still missing the boat on inclusion."
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Dianne teaches women that we all can lead and make a difference in helping to lift other women up. Women are 51% of the world's population and we can do great things together!
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"All of us can make a difference. We can lead from where we are."
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
She also talks openly about her battle with cancer and why she doesn't think of herself as sick. She also shares her feelings about life and death. Life is not a dress rehearsal so you must do all the things you want to do!
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
    "While you are living, LIVE!"
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is a really powerful conversation with a beautiful and inspiring woman! Believe me when I tell you that we can all use a little bit of Dianne in our lives so click on the link in bio to download and get to listening. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
