- Did I just fixed all your programming issues.... Or did I just confuse you more.
As a coach you’ll find out very quickly that doing everything “by the book” is an arduous task and isn’t always practical.
That being said, having a framework to work within is always helpful. I’ve tried to illustrate what I use here at Smith’s Fitness with this graphic.
Another thing I’ve found is that semantics is probably the most confusing part of getting your head around key concepts, as in, there are a lot of descriptors for the same idea, don’t get lost in the noise.

- The Hitchcock Experience 100, 50, and 13.1 Mile Endurance Runs
- Sunset and sunrise...
All in a single visit to Hitchcock Nature Center.
What an amazing experience to witness and be part of firsthand.
A friend asked if I would pace two loops of his 100-miler at The Hitchcock Experience. What an honor! It was the first time anybody had asked so of course I jumped at the opportunity. What a first!
The conditions were pretty tough. Snowfall earlier in the week dumped 9", the daytime temps barely touched 30°, the overnight temp dipped down to near 10° and of course the wind kicked up at midnight sending windchill values down near 0°. First shift started around 11pm and we returned to the lodge at 5am. It was so cold, the wind up on the ridges and open areas cut through any layers you were wearing and the sky was crystal clear. Honestly, despite the bitter cold, it was a stunning scene to run in. To see all the headlamps bouncing around the park kept me smiling. We'd be high up on a ridge and there were the runners way down below or miles off in the distance. Glowing. Everybody grinding through the snow to get that ramen or soup or Fireball at the next aid station. The snow shimmered like glitter in the light thrown out in front of us. The stars were so sharp and bright against the clear black sky. It was absolutely beautiful and I'd do it again...in a heartbeat.
Unfortunately, after running in these conditions for over 24 hours, the cold of the night beat my friend down too much. He was looking so strong but extreme conditions like this are nearly impossible to train for. Of the 55 runners registered for the 100-miler 47 people toed the starting line. Of those 47 runners 30 of them dropped out during the race. As far as the remaining 17 runners I'm not sure how many officially finished yet since the official race results aren't posted as I write.
The Hitchcock Experience and what an experience this year was. Looking forward to 2019's event 😊
