  • I’ve been talking about fake tan for 3 days now & the response has been enormous. I joked about it being an integral part of white culture (!) but as I’ve never used it I had no idea how true that was.
Loads of girls have sent me stories of feeling pressure to tan or feeling gross when they were pale. It seems rooted in insecurities. I have a lot of thoughts on this but I’m learning how deep-rooted, inter generational and heartbreaking this whole thing is. FOR MORE: see my stories or my archived highlight “Fake Tan” to catch up.
    ⠀⠀
-Lots of you thought Ariana was mixed
    ⠀⠀
    - assuming the Kardashian’s were mixed (a couple of them are but ‘mixed’ doesn’t mean you change hue dramatically in puberty)
    ⠀⠀
    - Seeing tan as slimming (?!) or looking healthy (?!) (I want to state categorically that unhealthy and overweight brown people exist)
    ⠀⠀
    - White people have said they’ve NEVER thought about this before - Loads of people inherited insecurities over their colour from their families (especially mums) and we’re indoctrinated into tanning by their mums or explicitly told to brown up - Mixed people have felt pressure to be a certain colour because media presents us with 1 shade as “mixed race”. This is fucking bullshit. I’m going to do a separate post on this later. MIXED PEOPLE COVER A WHOLE FUCKING SPECTRUM.
    ⠀⠀
    - Some heartbreaking comments that I’m copying below:
    ⠀⠀
“My sister is crazy for fake tan, people assume we’re not related. I haven’t seen her actual skin tone in years”
    ⠀⠀
“I’m mixed and I used to use fake tan because I felt like I needed to be browner so people could tell I was mixed, most of the girls in my class used fake tan and were darker than my actual tone”
    ⠀⠀
“It feels like a safe way of getting to where I need to be”
    ⠀⠀
“My sister can’t leave the house without tanning, she thinks being Indian is like the goal”
    ⠀⠀
“I’m plus-size. My mum used to tell me that tanned fat was better than normal fat”
    ⠀⠀
“So many people told me I’d be prettier if I fake tanned. It makes me feel like I’m automatically less attractive because I’m pale”
    PHEW 😢💔👱🏽‍♀️
