  • ON THE ROAD

Language opportunities are all around us. Using spontaneous language in everyday settings allow our children to associate spoken words to objects/concepts they encounter with daily. Whether or not we take the bus, taxi or car, when we're travelling from one place to another, there's so much we can do to encourage language in kids.
    .
🌟 RED LIGHT STOP, GREEN LIGHT GO
This was a major distraction activity we did when the kids hated the carseats (13mo Miss K still does 😒).
▪For babies, point out the traffic lights and describe what to do as they change.
▪Older babies? Invite them to tell you or the driver what they should do.
▪Even older children with incessant why's (read: 3yo Mr L)? Explain what amber means, WHY you need to stop when it's red, etc.
➡️ You'll definitely pass by lots of lights, so you get plenty of repetitions to reinforce colours, actions, and the concept of traffic safety.
    .
    🌟 COUNTING
Any truck or bus loving kids? We like to count special vehicles like the DOUBLE DECKER BUSES or the DUMP TRUCKS that pass by. It not only works on their counting, but also encourages visual scanning, which definitely helps with maintaining attention!
    .
    🌟 ROAD SIGNS
I always point to the STOP sign whenever possible. It's an important traffic safety rule, plus it's great for phonemic awareness. S-T-O-P, /s//t/o//p/, stop! Pictorial signs encourage descriptive language just as well. Invite them to look at the picture then guess what it could mean.
    .
    🌟 I SPY
This is a classic childhood game that's simple and fun on the go. Take turns to play! I spy with my little eye... something that starts with A (letter sound) / is round (shapes) / is purple (colours) / has 2 wheels (distinct feature).
    .
    🌟 DIRECTIONS
Turn on your voice as you navigate. Repeat after Google Maps if you must. Keep LEFT, go STRAIGHT, turn RIGHT, make a U-TURN - these are useful words that support understanding and use of clear instructions.
    .
In this car trip, I got both kids to hold their own personalised kitchen napkins roll as their megaphones so they could use directional language to instruct their dad on WHERE and HOW to go. Swipe to see them in action 😂.

  • An Early Childhood Educator studies about the ways to engage children in music, song, rhymes and so much more. Plus a million other little details related to the growth and development of young children.
An Early Childhood Educator is a professional. They do work that makes a difference. That matters. And — they know what they are doing — because they are both trained and qualified. Early Childhood Educators play peekaboo, sing songs, dance, paint, nurture, inspire and create with young children all the time. They do this to help them grow and develop into capable, self directed human beings who can make a difference in the world. Early Childhood Educators know a whole lot about children.
At 45 Conversations & ECE Workshops we design, develop and offer professional development workshops, retreats and learning experiences for Early Childhood Educators. We do this because we believe in the importance of the work of Early Childhood Educators.
