  • On my first day of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi classes at UHM we introduced ourselves with our names, our ʻone hānau and our degrees/majors. When it was my turn, I didn’t know word for PhD, so I asked my Kumu, @kahikina , for the proper word, she responded: “Laeʻula.” .
The next year my Hawaiian language Kumu (and cousin), Keawe Lopes, said the name comes from the way PhD students often turn their foreheads red from repeatedly bashing them against their desks and books. The name came to be supremely descriptive of my experience. so much so that honestly im still recovering from a degree that I technically earned six months ago. .
But anyone who knows me, and has been around for long enough, also knows that Laeʻula is a pretty appropriate title for me under just about any circumstance. Im bull headed, stubborn and easily frustrated but im also passionate and deeply persistent. Therefore, I tend to bash my head up against just about anything that comes in my way. This has made for an incredibly painful and rewarding life. .
Today I reflect on the people who have made this all possible and the people who I feel so fortunate to be able to celebrate with. I have been so blessed to be surrounded by and loved by this ʻohana that has so deeply cared for and loved me since day one. These people have walked this path beside me, have cherished me, cultivated me, and inspired me. I feel so fortunate to call them my ʻohana. Mahalo piha iā ʻoukou a pau. .
And of course to our lāhui, who has pushed, loved and inspired me: your contribution to my life and this moment cannot be overstated. In every time of doubt or pain that felt insurmountable, it was you that kept me moving forward, kept me fighting and pushing. We did this together, and I offer this moment, and my life to you. .
    Ke aloha nō, .
